When you're planning a trip to Los Cabos, there are a few things you should take into account to steer clear of common tourist pitfalls. One thing that should be evident from the get-go is that sometimes you can get a better deal if you book in advance and take recommendations from concierges. But if you still take matters into your own hands, here are some of the best practices for visiting Los Cabos.
Luxury and quality of life
Firstly, let's talk money. You already know, but Cabo can get quite expensive in general. Plan accordingly, to book in advance as much as you can, and don't be afraid to just pay whatever your excursion is worth. However, and this is important, don't pay for something you don't want or pay extra for nothing.
Pay for most things with your credit card, you'll often get a better deal if you pay in pesos and let your bank's official exchange rate do the work.
For small shops or to buy small things, you would do great bringing $200 in $1 bills and another $200 in $5s. That will go a long way for tipping and small purchases. Avoid $100 bills altogether; vendors typically can't break them, and you’ll only frustrate yourself trying to get change.
Keep your card for bigger expenses and your small bills for day-to-day moments where convenience and courtesy go hand-in-hand.
Another concern foreigners have is safety. Cabo is safe, but like any tourist hub, it has its share of people trying to take advantage of the unaware. Avoid wearing flashy items at sketchy locations. In the streets, a polite “No, gracias” is often your best friend, unless there's something you do want, regardless of helping anyone.
Regarding nightlife, Cabo knows how to throw a party.
There probably won't be any problems unless you stir them up, so stay respectful, and most of all, stay out of trouble. Getting drunk is one thing; getting loud, aggressive, or landing yourself in the local drunk tank is another.
Finally, have your transportation from the airport arranged in advance. Step outside confidently, find your driver, and start your Cabo trip there.
Budgeting
Now, how to make a Cabo trip on a budget. Well, we're not cutting on expenses for excursions, safety, service, and variety are all important parts. Let's cut on the side.
We talked about not paying more to the bank for exchange fees, but you can also get a credit card from a company with 0% foreign transaction fees, and there are some that even give you a little refund. Make all this preparation beforehand.
If you’re on a budget, Cabo can still be enjoyed in full color without draining your account, there are still some great options to party, have dinner, or even enjoy the beach. Start by getting an Airbnb; no need to get to the big brand hotels that are expensive. But if you want to go to an all-inclusive, you can save up on drinks and food.
Do one or the other, but if you run the Airbnb idea, stock up on basics at Oxxo or Costco, and grab your drinks at La Europea. Eat outside all you want, but the snacks and drinks for a house party can be comparatively cheap.
Finally, have a plan or schedule. Creating a plan will lead you to understand what the average price of everything is, so you know where to haggle and where it's not worth it. Also, preparing in advance will let you know which places are nice, cheap, high-end, and good, and which ones are tourist traps.
If you don't know where to start with your party plans, we encourage you to contact one of our experienced concierges, who will help you and give you personalized recommendations.

Being in the majority often means it's time to step back and reconsider.
